Do you have any phobias? Most people have at least one and some people
have many things that causes them fear. A few people are so overwhelmed by all sorts
of fears that they never leave their house. These fears can include fear of
heights, to crowds, to spiders, to speaking in public, and the list can go on
and on.
We get the word phobia from the Greek word Phobos. What
is interesting is the fact that in Scripture we are told that we should fear
the Lord God. Mt 10:28 says, “And do not fear those who kill the body but
cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and
body in hell.” So, fearing God is a biblical concept.
As Christians we are not to be afraid of God which would drive us away from Him, but
we are to have proper understanding of the fear of God which would cause us to cling to Him.One of the requirements for the kings of Israel was to
hand write a copy of the laws of God and they were to be with them all the
time. The reason they were to do this is made clear in Deuteronomy 17:19 which
says, “And it shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life
that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the
words of this law and these statutes.”
So, for us to have a proper understanding of fearing a
Holy God, we need to read His word and apply it to our lives. By doing this, we
will learn to fear the Lord our God which will cause us to love Him in even a greater
depth. Ps 147:11 says this, “The Lord delights in those who fear Him and who
put their hope in His unfailing love.”
