How many times have you heard the phrase, “That’s not
fair?” If you had children, you probably heard that statement many times as they
were growing up. At times life just isn’t fair which is the result of sin being
in the world. I recently heard on the news about Ohio, Colorado and a few other
states that are offering a chance to win a million dollars if you would get
vaccinated. It’s not fair if you don’t live in one of those states, you have absolutely
no chance to win the money; that’s just not fair.
Asaph, one of the chief musicians under King David, wrote about a dozen Psalms. In Psalm 73 he was initially seeing that the wicked seemed to prosper in their way. They didn’t seem to be affected by the normal difficulties of life. This just didn’t seem fair to
Asaph as those who were seeking God had to bear all the hard situations that life gave to them. In Psalm 73:16 Asaph says, “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me.” He then continues his thought in the next verse, “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end.”He knew that this life is only temporary but there is an
eternal life when we breathe our last breath here on earth. He knew the end of
the wicked, they would perish and be eternally separated from God bearing the
wrath of their sin. That is not the case for those who have put their trust in
Jesus. In verse 24 he states, “You will guide me with Your counsel, and
afterward receive me to glory.
Back to the statement of not being fair. What is not
really fair at all is the fact that Jesus died so we could live and that our
entire sin debt has been paid. It is not fair that God has lavished His love
upon us, it isn’t fair; it is grace. You can’t earn it, you merely need to humble
yourself and receive it.
