Reminders

Everyone has their method of keeping track of important dates that need to be remembered. When you go to the Doctor, most of the time they give you a card with your next scheduled appointment written on it and some of them even call you the day before so you don’t forget. We use calendars to write down dates and with most cell phones you can set reminders so an alarm goes off so you don’t forget an important event. We are all prone to forget so we need reminders for things that are important.

Ps 103:2 states, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” The Psalm continues talking about some of these benefits that we may be prone to forget, hence the

reminder. We have the benefit of forgiveness of all of our sins and we are crowned with God’s lovingkindness and mercies. Not only from a salvation standpoint, but we have His provision and protection in our day to day lives. How often we take so many of His blessings for granted, because we are just so accustomed to having them? Let us remember not to forget to thank and bless the Lord for all His benefits.

Paul had to remind Timothy to stir up the gift of God that was in him. In the Apostle Peter’s second letter, he mentions several times about reminding the Christians to make their calling in Christ secure, so they would have an abundant entrance when they go home.  Do we at times go through our whole day without a prayer of thankfulness for all Christ has done for us? We all need reminders because we take so much for granted in our Christian life.

There are also times when the circumstances of life overwhelm us. The author of Lamentations was speaking of all the bitterness and affliction that was going on, but then he makes this statement in Lamentations 3:21-23, “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

May we always recall the goodness and mercy of God in our daily lives no matter what is going on. “Bless the Lord o my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
