Meditate

We have all probably experienced seeing people talking while they are driving, but then we notice they are the only person in the car. With cell phones and Bluetooth capabilities in most cars, they were probably taking to someone on the phone. There is also the possibility that they were talking to themselves. Before we label them as crazy, is it OK to have a conversation with ourselves?

Psalm One makes the contrast between the ungodly and the righteous. Verse one talks about the ungodly walking, standing and sitting with others just like themselves. Then

verse 2 speaking about the righteous person says this, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.”

When we hear the word meditate, we may imagine something like transcendental meditation, where you hum and try and empty your mind of all thoughts so you can relax. That is not what the biblical meaning of meditation is at all. It is just the opposite; it is the filling of our mind with the word of God. It is thinking about His word and how we are to apply it to our lives which brings glory to God and true joy in us. In the Old testament there are five different Hebrew words that are translated as meditate. The word used is Psalm One goes beyond the fact of just thinking about the law. This word carries the meaning about speaking with the mouth and the heart. Therefore, it is biblically sound for us to talk to ourselves about the word of God.

A great way to meditate on God’s word is to memorize some passages of scripture that you can say out loud to yourself, which will encourage your soul and give you a deeper appreciation and application of His word. As we talk to ourselves about the word of God, we should also be asking Him, “How does this apply to my life and what do I need to learn as I meditate on Your word?”

Have a great week talking to yourself.
