From early on in our childhood we had rules and orders that we were told we had to obey. These rules came from loving parents trying to protect their children from danger such as; stop and look both ways before crossing a street. Other rules were designed to help us grow to be mature and responsible citizens. Don’t be late, work hard and help others when you can. These were just a few rules given to us so we could have a positive influence on others.
As we got older, we had laws to protect us from danger as well. Speed zones, seat belt laws, and giving the right of way to pedestrians are just a few for our safety and for the safety of others as well. Though these are man-made laws, as Christians we have an even greater responsibility to observe the laws of the land.
We are told in Romans 13:1. “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” Though we have the privilege and responsibility to vote authorities into office, God places those who are in authority over us. From the president of the United Sates to the president of a home-owners association, God has put them in office. Because of that truth from scripture we need to obey. There are no qualifications regarding whether you think it’s a good law or if you think it will benefit you in some way. If it is not contrary to God’s law, we obey man’s law.
There are so many changes in regards to the severity and how we are to protect ourselves from this coronavirus. It seems to change daily. We really become unsure of what we are to do. If there is mandate to do something, we need to do it, no questions asked. But what if we have a choice on what to do? Pray and let the Lord direct you in your course of action. We don’t want to do anything that would cause someone to stumble in their faith and we certainly wouldn’t want to cause any harm to a person because of the choice we have made.
Meditate on this scripture in decisions you make regarding safety. Romans 13:10 says, “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” May God’s wisdom and grace be upon you as we navigate through this together.
