All of us are now spending more time in our apartment or home than we have ever done in the past and much of that time is spent being alone. We are told to have limited physical interaction with others; we are told to keep our distance. As a result, we now have much idle time on our hands. There is a saying that idle hands are the devil’s workshop. What about an idle mind? I would venture to say an idle mind is even more dangerous. Eastern religions incorporate an aspect of meditation, which is emptying your mind of all thoughts. What a dangerous thing to do. With an empty or idle mind, you are susceptible to all kinds of wicked, evil and especially fearful thoughts.
As Christians we are told to mediate as well. Does that seem like something we shouldn’t be doing? For us meditating is entirely different. It is a filling of the mind not an emptying of it. Phil 4:8 states, “Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things lovely, whatever things are of a good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.” So it’s clear from scripture that we ought to fill our mind with the good. The very first item mentioned we are to meditate upon is whatever things are true.
Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through Me. Ps 119:160 mentions that the entirety of your word is truth. John 17:17 says sanctify them by Your truth, Your word is truth. Everyone of these items we are to meditate upon can be related to Jesus and the word of God.
When our mind is filled with Jesus and the word, there will be little room for fear but much room for gratitude. Have a wonderful week having your mind filled up with God.
