I really like this word but it carries with it a huge weight
of responsibility and also a great sense of freedom. When I first heard it I wasn’t quite sure of
its meaning so I had to look it up. The
act of willing or choosing is how Random house defines volition. Our life is full of volitional acts. You made
many choices, one of which was to be at church this morning. Before you got here you decided when to get
up, what to wear, what to eat, etc. Bad
choices result in consequences which are sometimes painful and the duration can
seem unending. God honoring choices brings forth the fruit of righteousness
which honors God and brings us peace and joy in our daily lives.
When Joshua was near the end of his life he challenged the
people of Israel with a volition. Now
therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the others side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:14-15

So we as
Christians have chosen to follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. But the reality of that statement is that
God in His sovereignty has really chosen us. Eph 1:4 says just as He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, that we
should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
He has chosen
us and we have responded to His voice and chosen Him
We choose to
honor Him by the decisions that we make on a moment by moment basis. We know that we don’t always make the right choices
but our desire is to walk worthy of the
Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work (Col 1:10) and
that is God’s desire for us as well.
The volition is ours to make. How will we live this life, this year, this
month, this day, or this hour? Lord help
us to always choose You.
